Seeking the Recluse but Not Meeting寻隐者不遇

September 12 – October 31, 2009 Opening Reception: Saturday, September 12th, 6:00 – 8:00pm

The gallery will feature a group of new paintings that reflect on the different surroundings of the artist Song Kun and her experiences within the world. The show will include single panel paintings as well as several diptychs and one triptych. It is accompanied by a catalogue that will be available for purchase.

The world is well aware of the breakneck speed at which China has been developing over the past twenty years. However, while embracing the opening of its country and the shift towards its own peculiar form of market economy, China's younger generation of artists are constantly challenged by the realities that conflict with the previous generation's idealism. Their everyday lives and artistic careers are intensely pressured by a society impatiently craving productivity and prosperity. This current generation straddles China’s history and China’s future as none has done before.

Song Kun's artistic practice for the past several years has been to first deconstruct a time period in her own life and then expose the results to scrutiny - critically investigating her own belief systems and place in society. The paintings included in Seeking the Recluse but Not Meeting represent her continuing quest for internal reconciliation and harmony in a chaotic world, where spirituality succumbs to consumerism and integrity surrenders to opportunism. Like her previous series of paintings and collages, Song works from her immediate surroundings. Each painting is a snapshot of a cherished moment in her life. The linear narrative element, present to one degree or another in each of the twenty paintings, helps us gain insight into her skepticism of pure capitalism and her personal attempts to honor the native traditions that has nurtured millions of Chinese for thousands of years.

The title itself is inspired by a poem by Jia Dao (779 – 843 CE, Tang Dynasty). In his work Seeking the Recluse but Not Meeting, the poet is looking for a hermit-like wise-man living in the mountains, knowing this master is near, but not being able to find him. The master, with his withdrawal from society, as well as the poet's quest to find him, function as metaphors for the search for meaning - a search that is often complicated by the turmoil of daily life. With China’s many traditional identities being deliberately replaced with a collective, global consumer identity, unparalleled cultural, environmental and social transformations threaten all aspects of life today. Song pursues her own brand of idealism within China’s massive urbanization and demonstrates her faith in China’s own history and culture, attempting to find inner peace amidst chaos. Within the exhibition, Song will incorporate music by electronic musician Mu Lian. The added aural effects stimulate both senses of sight and sound to create a more comprehensive interpretation of each depicted scene. Mu Lian’s music samples electronic sound, acoustic instruments and vocals, imprinted with picturesque soundscapes, the style of soliloquy story-telling and the quality of post-rock and minimalism.

Song Kun was born in Inner Mongolia in 1977 and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2002. She is a founding member of the Chinese collective known as N12 Group, consisting of twelve of the most talented artists born in the 1970’s who emerged from the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2002 to 2004. N12 Group organized four D.I.Y. exhibitions from 2003 to 2006. Their work demonstrated a clear departure from the well-known Chinese stylistic developments of political pop and cynical realism towards individual styles driven by their personal emotions and psyches. Song Kun was recognized by members of the award committee of the 2005 Triennial of Chinese Art as the “Most Promising Young Female Artist.” In 2007, Song exhibited It's My Life at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles which was her first solo exhibition in the United States. The installation featured a selection from her series of three hundred sixty-five paintings that each candidly depicts one day in a year of Song's daily existence.

今日有风，把云吹拢又吹散。在生活区见到一片云河，一边是蓝色的岸，蓝得醉人。走过天桥，河就不见了。很容易就想起在湖南的某个晚上，十一点的郊外的风，在耳边拂过，眼只望到黑暗的山形。除了由黑过渡至白，再没别的色彩。那就是“微微的风，在黑暗中舞动”带来的感觉。到达目的地，这些便全消失了。“天地虽大，富有万物，雷动风行，运化万变，寂然至无，是其本矣。”原本的形式归无，但另有一个在这原本的基础上改变的景，在记忆中发酵成另一付模样。

一些都在空生有有又归于无的过程中循环。秋天来了，夏天走了，秋天生于夏天之上，又逝于冬天之下。

上完课从学校外围走回来，发现叶子落了许多。去年的落叶有今年的多吗，去年这时我在哪里，这些我全都想不起来。《慢》写道：“慢的程度与记忆的程度成正比；快的程度与遗忘的强度直接成正比。”假设这个公式成立，时间是过得太快，以致我把如此近的事情都遗忘了。要想回四、五个月以前，我们的关系是如何也困难。甚至，想要复述刚刚别人所说的话也无法做到。

现在，要捉紧时间回忆，待到忘记就无回忆可言。

这段时间又开始做梦，每次睡眠都会有好几个无关联的梦。但已经不会失眠。之前那个无梦的好睡眠应该只会在无压力的空闲时候才有。

近期梦到湖，船，朋友，蛇，破房子，生，死，坠落，追赶等等，我试图去分析其中意味，现在放弃了。蛇暗示情欲这类的说法太无说服力，以梦生死定凶吉也不知其道理所在。当它们是奇怪的故事倒是有趣些。

最好的事情是不会再梦见你。最好不要再梦见你。心未死却累极。再无耐心单方面猜测你想要表达的话，再无耐心等待沉默结束，也再无耐心去走那么六个小时的路。水熬至干涸，也无需加柴了。

以上所述前不搭后，只是记下片段式的想法。知道你不知道，而我舍不得让它们在心里烂掉。

今天还是一个朋友生日，祝他生日快乐。其实，真正的光棍节应该是1月1吧。11和11都成双，只有1和1还形影单只。

五天不见，我已觉得这是极限。沉浸在爱情之中的自己，早已不是之前的我。

每日早起坐车，在空调与高温之中来来回回，外加思念之深，身体能熬至现在才生病已经很满足了。从周一等到周三，再从周三等到今晚，而今晚，你还是不能回来。想到朋友签名上的一句话：让身心劳累，便可不去想你。若是可以，让我累到无法思考吧。

只有书长久相伴。它不会自已走开，只有你离开它而已。当我无所事事时，我想到的除了爱情，只有书。等到爱情不在的时候，书又会回归为我心中的“唯一”。

下乡回来近两周了，博客也疏于更新，照片也懒得发了。

今天是近一个月来第一次如此夜睡，忽然想起前几日做的一个梦。这些天心情不佳，总想再次出行。也许是这个原因，有了这个梦。

梦中我们在回来的火车上。先前把行李箱托给一个男生，后来在某一个地方停站时，他过了来，并没有带上我的行李。他所在的车厢似乎没有认识的人，行李留在那里自然是不安全，于是自己便去他所在的车厢拿自己的行李。车内站着的人很多，多是农民模样的老人。我经过他们……不知...
